In John 14, Jesus is talking about Heaven – talking about how He is soon about to leave his disciples. And this is what it says here in verse three.
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me, that you may also be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going. Thomas said to him, lord, we do not know where you are going, so how can we know the way? And Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know that my father is well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him. And then Philip says, lord, show us the father. That will be enough for us. Show us the father, that will be plenty.
Again, the people closest to Jesus are missing what he’s trying to say. He’s going to go off to this place and prepare it where I will come, and I will take you to, and you will be with me, and you will be with the Father.
And they say, where? How do I get there? I don’t know how. Jesus claims to be the revelation of God the father right in front of them. If you see me, you see the father, and they say, could you just show him to us? I mean, we’ve seen the signs, we’ve seen the wonders. We’ve heard what you said, but could you just show him to us? This comes right after a statement where basically Jesus says, you’re looking at him.
How clearly can I put this? If you’re looking at me, you see the father. I am the way. I am the truth. I am the life. If you follow me, that is how you get to these things that your whole life you’ve been chasing after. Truth, absolute truth, knowing what is truly real in this world. I’m the way to the truth. Life, life, to the full feeling fulfilled, living out your purpose, being a full and complete human.
